July 5, 2012 // 3:23 pm - Today Japanese site PocketNews (linked above) reports a new PS3 Slim model (CECH-4000 / CECH-4001x) has been spotted registered on the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) site.

While there is little information on the new SKU, the FCC ID is listed as AK8CBEH19C1 and rumors suggest the new PlayStation 3 model may feature a top-loading disc tray similar to the one on the PS2 Slim.

El33tOnline.com also points out that PS3 Firmware 4.20 slightly changed the wording on the XMB from 'Eject Disc' to 'Remove Disc' when you press Triangle to bring up a disc-based game's option menu.. stating, "Sony released a PS2 Super Slim in 2008 that featured an internal power supply and was lighter than the original Slim model."

To quote, roughly translated: "You think AK8CBEH19C1 is FCC ID, so CECH-4001x model number in North America, and appeared in the model number called CECH-4000B or CECH-4000A in the country.

From a position to paste the nameplate has been published, the shape of the body as a CECH-3000 of the current model is so different.

I hate cheesy so becomes at once when the design was a top-loading or in the cost down.

Below are pictures from the PDF files of the CECH-4001x label location, CECH-3000 model label the current location and CECHA00 first model label location.

Note the image is for the confirmation of the position and label body shape, size comparison can not be so disparate body size for each model."

Product Name:

  • CECH-4001x*1 - Computer Entertainment System
  • DECH-4000Ax*1 - Debugging Station
  • DECH-S4000Ax*1 - Debugging Station for AV test

*1: It will be replaced by an alphabet denoting the different hard disk specification.
*2: The difference between DECH-4000Ax and CECH-4001x is software only.
*3: DECH-S4000Ax and DECH-4000Ax is same in specification, but DECH-S4000Ax is for AV test.

Finally, according to Develop-Online.net, it is also reported that Sony could unveil the new super slim PS3 model at German games industry consumer event Gamescom next month, however, as usual Sony has declined to comment.

It looks like they're trying to make this look ugly so whoever buys it looks bad or something. Sheesh...

Cheaper version of the PS3 from the looks of it. I'm estimating $200. There was a 20gb model among the launch phat consoles. It's no surprise this will be cheaper and focused more on security update perhaps.

16 GB HDD is simply nonsense - you can't even get drice of such small capacity anyway and even if you would they'll cost much more than common drives with capacities in range of hundreds GBs. So it's eihter a "typo" and should be really 160 GB or it will be a SSD drive / flash storage instead.

The 16gb model can actually be a few things.

1) It can be an attempt at a cloud based system.
2) The 16gb will be cheaper and more for people who have large hdds for their ps3 (what is the point on spending $300 on a ps3 with 250gb when you can get one for $200 and swap an already existing hdd into it?)
3) It is one of the biggest troll we've seen from Sony.

My old old old ass PC's hard drive is even bigger than that (but not by much). It rings in a whopping 40gb hard drive (well 37.7gb), and the all powerful 256mb of ram. I don't want to wait an hour to turn it on to view the rest of the specs, but I will have you know, it was top of the line when it was first released. How Far We've Come.

16GB? Is that supposed to be built-in flash memory, because I haven't heard of an HDD that small in an eternity. The oldest part of my computer is my 500GB HDD from when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

Not much I guess, at least with the 4GB Xbox 360 you can use an external HDD to store game saves and XBL Games and demos. With a 16GB HDD and the possibility of no discs that would limit the amount of games you could have and games like Uncharted which is 20GB would have to be in 2 parts. The 4GB 360 still seems like the best console for price.
