February 8, 2011 // 9:22 pm - Korean company LG wants Sony's PlayStation 3 and Bravia televisions banned in the US for what it claims are patent infringements relating to Blu-ray playback.

To quote from EuroGamer: "The Foss Patents blog contacted Eurogamer to reveal documents filed with the US International Trade Commission in Washington relating to the complaint. mThe ITC has the power to block imports of products that violate US patents.

LG claims Sony is infringing four of its patents in a complaint that broadly relates to "certain electronic devices having a Blu-Ray Disc player and components thereof", but the PlayStation 3 (Model No. CECH-2501A) is the only Sony product to be specifically named in the main document of the complaint.

A Bloomberg reports suggests LG's claims are revenge for cases brought against it by Sony in December. Sony claims the Seoul-based company is infringing seven of its patents relating to LG phones. Sony has also filed a civil lawsuit against LG Blu-ray players.

LG and Sony are the world's second- and third-largest TV makers, trailing Samsung."

I hope LG wins this one and gets the PS3 banned. Then all $ony's lawsuits will be dropped as if they cant sell the PS3 in US then how can they continue the lawsuit in US?

Why would you want the PS3 not sold in the USA? It wouldn't stop any court cases as they have already started and need resolved before they were ended it'll take many years before they stop now.

Even then it wouldn't stop a court case as the PS3 is still sold around the rest of the world.

Sony could move it all to another country and just have people brought to that country anyway to be taken to court.

It's all too late for stopping now.

Sony has already done what they set out to do. tie up all the ps3 homebrew devs, change keys in 3.56 since all the keys weren't out. This keeps them from developing/hacking 3.56. They will keep postponing and postponing court cases to cause the devs to still be scared (hence no further development) patch everything to eventually go to 90% cloud for game saves/any multiplayer content. require online updates instead of cd/usb updates(to eliminate hacks completely... and eventually off-line playing for those without internet hooked up to it, so those too have to be hooked up).

This will not result in anything other than a cross-licensing agreement. This is how corporate patent disputes work. Company A sues Company B over alleged patent infringement. Company B revues its patent portfolio and counter sues Company A. Many billable hours later, both companies agree to a settlement to share said patents and their lawyers laugh all the way to the bank.

It's great that they think the only resolution to CFW is to change Hardware within the PS3, wonder what the response will be if Sony ask us all to send our PS3 back to get hardware mods done hahaha.

Considering that EA and other game companies have started up the whole "online pass" thing and GameStop hasn't started to blacklist them I think we can safely assume that GameStop isn't going to do much of anything but try to come up with a new scheme to continue making money. Or fold early so that the executives can roll around in their money and lay off all those employees.

Sony don't need LG to screw them in PS3 sales, they are doing it themselves! ESPECIALLY if they go thru with the Serial Keys on disks! That means GameStop will not be able to sell used games and that's what their primary function is, pre-played games and systems! Even though GameStop sells new games, but so does every other electronic store! I am sure GameStop will stop carrying PS3 PERIOD if this Serial Keys crap actually comes in play I know I would!

Wait, maybe I missed something. The lawsuits that Sony brought against LG were, as best as I understood, due to LG copying some of Sony's technology for their phones. But this, what the heck were they waiting for? The PS3 has been out for years and they didn't say anything.

If Sony had done this, which sounds like a huge issue going on then why wouldn't they have come out earlier to cry about it? It just seems really suspicious especially since Blu-Ray has been out for awhile now. If they're just trying to sue Sony to get revenge for Sony's lawsuits then they're just wasting everyones time and Sony likely has more money than LG does.

Sony is digging their own hole. Soon they won't be available to climb up.

Bought out the HD-DVD market, bought out half of the Blu-ray market due to the Playstation 3; now that they're *trying* to completely lock the Playstation 3 making it unplayable and functional, they have to do something. I guess they will have to open up a few stitches on the Playstation 3 if you ask me.
