May 17, 2007 - Looks like Sony's super spy is going back into the field for another top secret mission. Last year, Gabe Logan and Lian Xing literally conquered the PSP with Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror. The title was an excellent action game for the system, and explored the dark past of the franchise's hero. At Sony's Gamer's Day event, SCEA announced the follow up to Dark Mirror, Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow. We immediately went behind enemy lines to gather new impressions of the game.
While Dark Mirror focused on Gabe, Logan's Shadow revolves around Lian Xing this time. The game, which picks up shortly after Dark Mirror has ended, starts off with Lian taking a much deserved vacation while Gabe is dispatched to the Indian Ocean by a governmental bureaucrat named Cordell. Apparently, the agency has received information that the USS Mount St. Helens (a naval supply ship) will be attacked by an infamous terrorist. Gabe is to land onto the ship, defeat the terrorists, and protect some classified cargo in a hold. Unfortunately, while he's on the mission, he receives radio communication from Theresa that Lian has gone missing, and barely manages to escape the ship with his life.
Shortly afterwards, Cordell and the government starts claiming that Lian is a double agent working for a foreign power. Dismissing Logan's arguments that Lian isn't playing both sides, and with paranoia about a mole in a classified agency running rampant, Cordell closes down the Agency. This forces Gabe and Theresa to go off on their own, without any equipment, command centers or backup, as they try to get to the bottom of their fellow squadmate's disappearance and supposed traitorous activities.
Logan's Shadow will still feature items that fans of Dark Mirror know and love, such as the various goggles and weaponry from the first title. However, Gabe has a couple of new tricks up his sleeve this time around. For one thing, Gabe will wind up fighting underwater with a spear gun, bolt pistol and bolt driver as he dives to the wreckage of a sunken ship. Gabe will also have the ability to blind fire around obstacles and corners to help drive back enemies that attempt to charge his position during a firefight. But perhaps one of the more interesting tweaks to the game formula is the ability to command other characters from the franchise's history, providing backup to Gabe during missions.
Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow will come out sometime this winter with a soundtrack from composer Azam Ali. We'll have more on the game as soon as it's available.
