Rumor: Sony's PSP2 Will Ditch the UMD and Feature 1GB of RAM
With the PSPgo price cut and recent PlayStation Phone rumors, today Kotaku.com (linked above) reports that Sony's PSP2 will ditch the UMD and feature 1GB of RAM.
Additionally, VG247.com are reporting that PSP2 is currently codenamed Veta.
To quote: "One of the key ones is that the PSP2 will not have a UMD drive. The UMD (Universal Media Disc) was launched in 2004 for use in the PSP. Initially, the format was used for movies, but slow sales of UMD films lead to studios dropping support for the format.
Sony's PSPgo is UMD-free version of the PSP, and sources tell Kotaku that the PSP2 will follow in the footsteps of that portable. Games will be stored on a Memory Stick, according to one source. Though we've also been told that Sony is still puzzling out what the final non-UMD storage solution will be for the PSP2.
We've also learned that the PSP2 will be a much more powerful gaming device with twice the RAM of the Xbox 360.
While we don't yet know all of the portable's system specifications, we have been told that the PSP2 will feature 1 GB of RAM. That's compared to the 64 MB of RAM the PSPgo and PSP 3000 have. Both of those portables use a MIPS R4000 CPU clocked at up to 333 MHz. By comparison the Xbox 360 has 512 MB of RAM and runs a 3.2 GHZ CPU."

I don't see why they would make it cost more to produce by adding extra RAM they don't need.
Edit: Maybe the clock speed on this bad boy will be... 3.9GHZ!?!?!?
I just couldn't stop myself from editing that in.

If it does not come with some kind of Media format, May it be games on pro duo sticks you buy or Other, I will not buy this. They done Seen that doing download only DOES NOT work. If i am going to buy something i want to be able to hold it in my hand. (Not joking)
Ps.. that's sad about the 1gig ram.. the PS3 does not even have 1gig of ram LOL... Hmmm maybe a hand held PS3 device is what the PSP2 will be HAHAHA that would be SWEET!!! (joking..)

Anyway, Ive had portables and I have mixed feelings about them, Ive enjoyed fully my nintendo DS for a couple of years then I just felt stupid playing underpowered games so I just dont know what to make out of portable systems with small screens and limited graphics.

THE FPS IS OVER 9000!! lulz sony loves to get ridiculous hardware basically gets used by 1 company once and than is not used to its robustness for several years!
PSP2 will literally burn a hole in you're pocket if left on.

Update the RAM to more than PS3... but yet keeping the CPU at 333Mhz!? makes no sense at all... that's like putting 1GB RAM in a PC with Windows 95, it will have more RAM but still be a Windows 95 machine with no new software support... they really need to bump up the CPU to at least match the iPhone 4...

It is going to be fail since it will be without the UMD.. Bad decision, Sony. Nintendo's 3DS is going to be a winner of all portable.
Sony, you make me sick!

Also i wonder how they will stop piracy, if its not a media. I can understand cloud computing being effective against piracy, but i doubt no media, and just downloads will be.
I think having a media is something that they will try to get rid off, but whther we are ready yet, i doubt it.

If i'm right, i remember some speculations about the psp2 will be using a 3core cell.
As for the umd, why you need that broken piece of s...? Also, the dl-only content would be bad either, but using a memory-card with a proper copy protection can do the trick. (the ninteno handhelds are also using cards, so why bother with an optical drive?)
