March 6, 2007 - It took over two years, but the Japanese PSP finally proved itself superior to the Dreamcast by reaching a milestone that forever eluded the final Sega platform: a platinum hit. The honor of first million seller for the PSP goes to Monster Hunter Portable 2nd which, according to Capcom, has topped the million mark in shipments. This feat comes just a couple of weeks following the game's 2/22 release.
The company did not provide actual retail sales figures for the game. However, data from independent sales tracker Media Create has the title selling over 700,000 units in its first week alone. Data for the second week won't be released until this Thursday.
If the long impossible feat of reaching platinum status on the PSP gives a hint to the strength of the Monster Hunter brand in Japan, this second little bit ought to cement its popularity as fact. Capcom also announced today that the first Monster Hunter Portable is about to reach the million shipped mark as well. Shipment figures for the first title include the 370,000 units that its "PSP the Best" series budget version has shipped.
Capcom has big plans for the Monster Hunter series, including mobile versions, a PC-based massively multiplayer version, and the PS3 Monster Hunter 3. But will the PSP get another installment? We'd bet a million well cooked meats on it!
