[Answered] Decrypt updated eboot.bin via backup manager?

Would it be possible to download and extract a retail update for a game, then burn those using the ps3gen that's floating around so both ps3 and backup manager think it's a game and can backup/decrypt it. Then we'd only have to repackage it and install it as an update or ftp the game and replace the files. Is it at all possible?

Not quite - namely the PS3 uses a few different types (or keys, or both!) for encryption.

Executables on BD are encrypted one way, and executables on HDD are encrypted another way, and they are not interchangeable, unless you of course, decrypt them first.

    So, alas no.
