PSKinect: PSN Alternative and Online Gaming Network for PS3

Today I read about PSKinect, a PSN alternative and online gaming network for PS3 users. If this is legit it's a nice alternative.

I don't know how legit this may be though as I believe it is coming from NGU kiddies who are known to provide some fake stuff. However, I wanted to post this to be looked into. To quote from the official site PSKinect.com:

    PSKinect FAQ:

    Q - What is PSKinect?
A - PSKinect is a Online Gaming Network for Playstation 3

Q - Is PSKinect similar to XLINK Kaii
A - No, PSKinect will be an online network similar to PSN with much more features

    Q - What games are compatible ?
A - We plan on having all games compatible with our servers

    Q - Do i need a Jailbroken PS3 ?
A - No, if you are on 3.55 or below you will be able to install PSKinect

Q - Will I still be able to access PSN ?
A - As of Febuary 2011 Sony patched all bypass's to access PSN on all 3.55 Official & Custom

Q - Will I need to register with PSKinect to use it ?
A - Yes, PSKinect will require a registration system

Very nice idea ! I hope they don't have overtaxed oneself with this project. Will take care when they launch.

Yeah I've seen that too, nothing but a few posts scattered around and not a word about the methods used to reverse the PSN architecture or any source of proof the project exists. Of course they could just be keeping this info to themselves for now.

I think it's fake but that's just my opinion but if it helps anyone else decide here's their whois info on the domain registration (censored a little)

Obviously fake info, but I know that doesn't mean the project is fake. I just think it is by the way they've gone about it.

Thanks for the news tonybologna and +Rep... for now I have moved this to the PS3 hacks section for discussion. Similar to the other article from NGU today, if this amounts to anything we can promote it to the main page also... time will tell.

any PSN replacement will require registration as without registration you can't have an account, without an account you can't have a unique login and without unique logins how would it tell users apart?

No reason a hacked PSN couldn't work. for trophy's and crap like that.

Doubt the game server will work though, a few games use third party servers not run by Sony but still verify the PSN account, for example Demon's Souls (which is scheduled to be turned off later this year). How would you emulate that?

You would have to reverse engineer every game server... maybe I'm wrong?

It would require quite a lot of servers to allow that many people to connect, right? After all, a Custom PSN is what we all want... Without a word on any kind of funding, i find this info suspicious.

But of course I hope to be wrong. That would be the punch in the face Sony deserves ^^

By the way, is connecting a very large amount of people together even possible? I suppose using P2P or something similar, but I can't see it done without a company to hold and maintain the numerous servers needed, am I wrong?
