    DVD Enabler Beta Arrives, Play Decrypted VOB Files on PS3

    Today mrgatz85 has released a Beta of an application he calls DVD Enabler and source code, which allows users to play decrypted VOB files on Sony's PS3 entertainment system.

    Download: DVD Enabler Beta for PS3 / DVD Enabler Beta PS3 Source Code

    To quote from his blog (linked above): "I have started a new project I am calling it DVD ENABLER.

    This will let you play Decrypted VOB files. Its simple and straight to the point, and easily able to reset the DVD drive.

    1) You will need to dump your VOB files. (I am working on Ubuntu with libdvdcss + vobcopy)
    in ubuntu you will need to do the run the following commands

    $ sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

    $ sudo apt-get install vobcopy

    2) Now with vobcopy installed run this command

    $ vobcopy ~/Videos/XXX/

    replace XXX with the movies name.

    3) Now you need to FTP those VOB files to

    replace XXX with the movies name.

    for example Hitman unrated looks like this

    4) Now Install the DVD ENABLER package... (you should know how)

    5) Now insert any DVD

    6) Ok now run the the DVD ENABLER. it will ask you

    Do you want to Enable the DVD ENABLER

    Yes will enable it and No will disable it. Running the program again and saying no will reset it.

    7) Now under Videos you should see a data disc. Select the data disc and you movies folders should show up. Navigate to the movie folder you want to play and play the first VOB file.

    Later Versions I will try to impalement a Built in Copier and Manger."

    I don't get it... I am sure I am missing something though...

    The PS3 already plays .VOB files from lets say a USB HD... I do this all the time. This seems like it actually adds more steps. And if I wanted I can transfer those VOB files from my USBHD to my HDD already in a non-jailbroken console in the XMB...

    So what does this do? Not trying to be rude, like I said I am sure I am missing something...

    Yes, PS3 can play decrypted VOB files on the fly. This utility makes no sense.

    Yeah, I don't get it either. But there is source code available so someone with knowledge could take a look at it and see what this app supposedly does.

    Same as everyone else, what does it do as you can already play VOB files and have never had any problems playing them. Maybe someone can shine some light on us.

    yea kinda pointless.. but from what i have gathered is it looks like it mounts vobs as if it were a dvd in the drive.. kinda dumb.. adds unnecessary steps... just search them from the video "tab" already in the XMB.. sorry to the creator.. might be time to go back to the drawing board

    This would be interesting if I could play DVDs regardless of region code or color system (PAL or NTSC)

    Thats why you have the ability to remaster them on the computer, therefore making this utility kind of useless...

    Just a personal opinion lol

    DVD reencoding loses quality, and loses menu and chapters navigation, so a lot of users like me would apreciate an app that bypass region code restriction and color system restriction...
