I put in the name.bin and it worked!!! NO complicated HEX shit needed!
YES one step further to a complete english version!
I've managed to repack a new START.DAT with some english files (name, nameplate, talks...) And here's what I get:
I can swear I saw this problem on some french site, translating Disgaea 1 or 2, so it can be fixed!
Edit: and it's not the zombie manner of talk, it's everyone talks so
Edit2: hope to see a great progress tomorrow morning!
Wow, you guys are really something!
Mad props guys!
English as base version
Can be overwritten:
name.dat (main character name still japanese)
talk.bin BUG: Strange formated text and stuck in talk (but no crash)
font.lzs BUG: Game cannot load kanji & hiragana because of the jap. language engine but works
zukan.bin NFO: classes & class info
CANNOT be overwritten:
char.dat BUG: Every Character is the main character, but Name is correct
dungeon.dat CRASH: On stage start SOLUTION: HEX-Edit the name of JAP dungeon.bin
mitem.dat CRASH: On stage start
mskill.dat CRASH: On stage start but some skill names right
It will be some work to find the right combinations of files to get a good working game...
Next I will try to use the japanese version as base version and change only files with important stuff.
Important files to change:
Contains: ALL Menus texts
Contains: Char names & char info for main characters
Contains: All talk texts
mitem.dat Contains: Item text
mskill.dat Contains: Skill texts
Contains: Skill texts & magic info
Contains: Class infos
Contains: All Stage names
Contains: All town folk texts info
Contains: All character titles
Contains: All Dark Assembly texts
Contains: All geo info texts
HABIT.dat Contains: All item habitans texts
and many more...
You guys are AWESOME!
For your entertainment:
The Attack of the Clones™ Bug (if you mess up the "char.bin" file)
The really funny thing is that you will get a PS3 trophy for it (reaching LV 9999 with the main character). Because one of the town character has this high level und this character is tagged with your name. Really messed up...
I was actually trying to do this yesterday to no avail, now with the tools available, I'll report in what I find while trying different replacements.
I'll be using the JAP version as a base.
The repeating characters bug with the talk.dat file seems to caused by the game expecting the text to be in Shift-JIS format, not ASCII. So converting the single-byte ASCII characters to their two-byte Shift-JIS equivalents looks like one way of fixing that problem. Will have figure out exactly how the talk.dat file is constructed before I can write a tool to do the convertin'.
It's also safe to include ToenEditMEssage - but it gives the same bug as talks.dat
Anyways, thanks for info! I see together we can achieve this!
I've found some info on "double-chars problem" here: gbatemp.net/t92717-disgaea-translation?&st=15
The guy was trying to translate jap. Disgaea 1 and ran into the same problem. He didn't make it out in the end, but maybe some comments are useful
I want to contribute somehow, if you guys need some help (within my limited means) its yours to wield as you see fit.
Also, which hex edit and associated programs are you guys using to hex edit?
