Top 10 Sony PlayStation 3 Games
November 10, 2006 - Amidst stagnant electronics sales, Sony has everything on its state-of-the-art PlayStation 3 console. Purportedly the most powerful of all consoles, it's also the most pricey--but will that prevent gamers from embracing the system?
Here are the top 10 picks that you should keep an eye out for this holiday season, sponsored by AT&T and its blue room.
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment | Developer: Bluepoint Games
A take-off of popular dual analog games like Geometry Wars and Mutant Storm Reloaded, Blast Factor brings "old school" and "new school" shooting together in one shiny downloadable package. Supporting true High Definition resolution at 1080p and offering the ability to change the position of enemies by moving the screen with the SIXAXIS tilt controller, Blast Factor delivers a bizarre but addictive experience as gamers work their way through multiple cells and specimens in the world's largest Petri dish. What's more, this launch day downloadable EDI game will offer add-on content in the near future -- ensuring multiple hours of play time beyond its initial 100 levels.
Call of Duty 3
Publisher: Activision | Developer: Treyarch
Figuring out how to make a World War II game feel fresh is harder than convincing people that "those Nazi guys" were actually really nice people. Despite the challenge, though, Activision is going back to the drawing board with Call of Duty 3 by putting an emphasis on close-quarters melee combat and highly destructible environments. Shooting out an enemy's cover can mean life or death, especially with the game's multi-path attacks and more advanced AI routines breathing down your next. Plus, up to 24 players can go compete online against each other at once and the PS3 version boasts specific commands unique for the system -- not a bad start for a familiar subject.
Fight Night Round 3
Publisher: Electronic Arts | Developer: EA Canada
It should come as no surprise by now that when the IGN offices are up for a little one-on-one competition, the first game we always turn to is Fight Night. As one of the first titles shown in real time on the PlayStation 3, the pugilistic series will make its debut on the system with EA Sports Fight Night Round 3. Not to be outdone by the already-released Xbox 360 version, the PS3 variant will include the all-new Get in the Ring mode, allowing you to fight an entire bout from a first-person perspective. Touting increased player detail, better animations and smoother and more realistic lighting system, the game is sure to serve as one of the system's visual showpieces. If you're looking for the pinnacle of boxing titles and one of the best competitive games around, EA Sports Fight Night Round 3 is sure to be it.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks | Developer: Bethesda Game Studios
It's no secret that Oblivion is a great RPG. The latest installment of the Elder Scrolls series received very high marks on both 360 and PC and Bethesda has already stated that they intend to keep the RPG consistent across all platforms. Not only will the game run in 1080p it also comes with the new quest "Knights of the Nine" which adds another 10-20 hours of gameplay to the hundreds of hours it already includes. For those of you lucky enough to get your hands on a PS3 at launch, you can revel in the fact that you can take home an RPG that may very well last you until the release of Final Fantasy XIII.
Madden NFL 07
Publisher: Electronic Arts | Developer: Tiburon
The most popular sports franchise of all time is keeping its PlayStation launch tradition alive by descending onto PS3s everywhere on day one. The PS3 version of Madden NFL 07 will highlight the Run to Daylight lead blocking feature, as well as the various mini-camps found in the 360 version of the title and a cool gang tackle mechanic that makes uses of the SIXAXIS wireless controller. Players will also be able to detect individual running styles for backs based on their attributes. With field degradation, new camera angles, and sharper visuals, Madden will tackle Sony's next-generation system with serious pigskin style this November.
