Sony: Cross-Game Chat Not Possible on PS3, Memory Restrictions

After being included on countless PlayStation 3 fans wishlists and even news that PS Vita will include it, today Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida admitted cross-game chat is not possible on the PS3 due to memory restrictions.

To quote from (linked above): "Cross-game voice chat is not possible on the PlayStation 3 because of memory restrictions, Sony has revealed.

The PS3's RAM is gobbled up by the games it runs, which prevents the much-desired feature from being implemented, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida told Eurogamer.

"Once a game gets RAM we never give it back," he said. "It's not possible to retrofit something like that after the fact."

Vita has 512MB of RAM and 128MB of V-RAM, compared to the PS3's 256MB of system RAM and 256MB of video RAM. This enables features such as cross-game voice chat to run in the background while games are being played.

On the PS3, however, things are different. "The game has to use its own memory to do [in-game voice chat].

There's always voice chat in the game. But it's a part of a game feature. It's not a part of an OS feature. That's the reason in terms of the ability to have voice chat across different games."

Just replace the useless in-game XMB with a lightweight ChatXMB, which gives you access to your messages, friends list, etc., including cross-game chat...

OR just have game developers allocate X amount of RAM dedicated to Cross-Game Chat if that's a feature they wish to add to their game when online/multi-player - otherwise use the lot when offline/single player campain.

OR just retro-actively reserve X amount of RAM for the OS to use while a game is running, it's just malloc.

AND this is something which would have been known VERY early on in the PS3's life i.e. at launch and the majority of user's number one feature request was Cross-Game Chat.

So why not add RAM to the slim models when stripping out everything else (including features!) to actually add a bit of functionality.
RAM is cheap, effective and simple to add to any machine that can use it, so this could have been identified and rectified sooner than now.

    Poor move guys.

Option 2 is impossible, read the article But yeah, they should've known this from the beginning.

Amazing they didn't concede sooner, it's been several years since this feature has been in demand and is even #1 in their PS Blog Ideas Share:

I don't see why they can't add it for all games going forward. Similar to how Trophies were added as a required feature and backported into some popular games. They could do the same thing here and it would be better than saying it's never going to happen.

It took them 5 Years to admit this.

A feature I could give a ratsass about. I can barely stand hearing people in the game I'm playing, let alone having a cross-chat feature. All I ever hear is some little kids or wanna-be "gangstaz" talking crap, someone elses music, someone having a conversation with someone else in the room, coughing, sneezing, clearing throats, blah, blah, blah.

Just run a program, which reserves 48 Megabyte of the RAM for Cross-Game Chat instead of "all time XMB function". So while you're running this program in the background, you can't access the XMB while you are in-game, but you can chat via Cross-Game Chat.

Hmm... why not make a Ram stick with Cross game chat function?
