April 26, 2007 - Sony didn't quite make its initial promise of a release for the PS3 version of EyeToy close to the system's launch last year. But at long last final details have been announced for the next gen version of the peripheral that made PS2 owners everywhere (mostly in Europe) pose in front of their TV.
The next generation EyeToy is formally known as "PlayStation Eye." In Japan, it will be initially bundled with The Eye of Judgment, the card game that's been used to demonstrate the peripherals at gaming events like E3 and the Tokyo Game Show. Set for Japanese release this fall, the bundle will also include a camera stand, a starter deck of cards, and a play mat.

Sony Japan's announcement today also included a few new details on the PlayStation Eye itself. A big improvement over the current generation EyeToy, PlayStation Eye is capable of capturing 60 frames per second video at 640x480 resolution or 120 frames per second video at 320x240 resolution. The peripheral includes a four channel microphone and will allow for voice chat without the use of a headset.
Pricing for the bundle was not announced today.
