SCEA President on Price Cut: PlayStation 2.5 for $299, Not PS3
During a recent interview, President of Sony Computer Entertainment America Jack Tretton reinforced Sony CEO Howard Stringer's views on a PS3 price cut.
To quote: "We could've come out with a PlayStation 2.5 for $299 or less, and in the first two or three years it would sell extremely well," he explains.
"But there would be a point where people would be going, 'I am not really seeing the incremental leap.'"
"People are having short-term thinking-the platform is not even three years old," Tretton adds. "It was $599; it's now $399." He goes on to say that Sony isn't planning to snare all customers in day one, but over a ten year period.

Exactly, its already the best all around console, considering the problems the 360 has and its expensive upgrades needed to match the ps3.
The wii is still at 250$ and has been from launch whilst the ps3 has gone down to 400 from 600 in just 2 years without stripping significantly from the console (unlike the arcade 360). The online is still free along with a lot of useful things.
My problem with sony and this console is the poor support for resolutions that are not standard HD and what seems to me as them focusing on security instead of keeping a very close eye on and paying nvidia more not to do a half ass job on the GPU. If they really put so much into locking down the console it worries me what kind of thinking is behind it.
It will never with the current generation of gamers and consumers get as far as it can unless its hacked and the ps3 has soooo much potential in that regard. Depending on how bad the economy is and the type of gamers that are around the ps4 might just bum if the security is the same.
Seems more and more a failing strategy... if they cant create the needed boost before the nex gen of consoles they might never catch up.
since they got hammed so badly with the PSP's failure, due to the DS... a lot of the psp titles flop/die/suck because people dont want to make for it, due to the high losses... though the psp reguardless has better titles than the DS, it is nowhere near what it could be... i mean the only selling titles are established series
i believe sonys general plan is to just make it seem like a safe bet, which is looked at as better from developers than the wii which has heavy piracy....
reguardless of either or, i dont think people understand that the consumer is stupid... reguardless of the reason, nintendo has yet to falter on the wiis price *which we all know is worth around 90 usd =P*
you can apply whatever logic on anything, but i like sony, i always have, they took a lot from Sega's example by giving the consumer the best they can which is screwing both of them =\, but i believe its minor things that is also hurting Sony... like when you buy a xbox360 you get all the wires, when i was talking to my business teacher, he was telling me what drew him to the xbox was simply because all wires are included... its minor details like this that are killing the PS3, more than piracy is... since tthere will be the annoying people with the 25 gig downloads =\
