Rumor: Inside Source Claims PS3 & PSP Price Cut in Early June
According to an internal 'proven' source of French Web site PS3Gen.fr, it's been unofficially confirmed that both the PS3 and PSP will receive price drops in early June.
This would obviously correspond with E3, which is scheduled to run between June 2 and June 4.
To quote: Although the source didn't reveal the new price for the PS3, it did provide the new price point for the handheld: 169 Euros, down from 189.
Of course, even if accurate, this information may only apply to the European/PAL regions, but we find it hard to believe that Sony wouldn't have this pair of price cuts spread worldwide. Additionally, the mystery source confirmed the existence of the much-rumored PSP 2, which should be available for the end of the year.
We've already received many pieces of evidence for a new PSP model; either the PSP-4000 or a PSP 2, and that includes the theory that it will be designed to compete with the iPhone. It sounds plausible, but with nothing concrete to solidify the claims, we still can't call it anything but "rumor and speculation."
And if you don't already know, Sony's business policy has always been the same: they simply don't comment on rumor and speculation.
We have no idea if these price drops will happen, but we'd like to think they'd be the biggest news of E3. The PS3 really needs that cut and everyone has been clamoring for it to happen; might Sony finally clear the last major hurdle in early June...?

...compete with iphone?
That would be cool. Of course I remember when they said that the psp would be an i-pod killer!! Are they going to make it with cell-phone features? And if so, will they make it available on multiple cell phone carriers? We shall see. PS - internal memory would be a good thing this time around.
Finally.. PS3 is in desperate need of a price drop.
It does seem reasonable for Sony to cut down the prices of the PS3 and the PSP, especially if they are planning on releasing a new version of the PSP, they'll want to clear the stock of old PSPs.
However, I highly doubt that any price cuts will be that drastic that people will clamor for the PS3 and PSP unless the parts needed to make a PSP and PS3 have gone down in price. Which is reasonable to think so. But if they have not, then it means Sony will be operating at a very great loss. They are already operating a near 200 dollar loss from what I read. But again, I could be wrong. Things change rapidly in this world of ours.
As a long time X360 owner (bought mine when gears1 came out) I have grown tired of the endless deluge of FPS and Sports games on offer. The platformers and action games that make up the Ps3 exclusive catalog have almost physically pulled me into the store. One hurdle remains, Four Hundred Dollars. I've yet to see a PS3 outperform a 360 in any way that justifies the extra cost. If Sony listens to the market and cuts the price, I can guarantee I will be one of the many easy sales their marketing team can point to. Price cuts work.
Well all Microsoft has to do it make a Blu-ray player for the the 360 already. They have plenty of money.
