[IMGW]http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/811/811046/singstar-20070806073808553.jpg[/IMGW] August 6, 2007 - This is Greg Miller -- PlayStation Team editor extraordinaire. Yes, I'm supposed to be focusing on my subject in this intro and using the IGN "we" voice -- but I'm not going to do that today. I have a bone to pick with Perry Farrell.
Lollapalooza landed in Chicago this past weekend and brought thousands of music fans, musicians such as Pearl Jam and the good folks from Sony Computer Entertainment.
With the gigantic music festival as a backdrop, Sony brought together a handful of videogame journalists to see SingStar in all its glory. The visitors got to play SingStar Amped, the writers got their first look at the track list for SingStar '80s and 15 songs for SingStar on the PS3 were announced along with a November 13 release date.
However, there was also a SingStar competition. Six crooners would face off, and the top three would perform "Been Caught Stealing" by Jane's Addiction -- one of the first official songs in the game -- and then have their videos judged by the band's lead singer -- Perry.
SingStar is my game.
The finals came down to Sterling McGarvey from GameSpy, Jose Sanchez from Electric Playground and myself. We all did well, but after Perry watched the videos and began to debate the winner, Jose -- clad in a northsider baseball jersey -- screamed "Go Cubs!"
Perry turned, repeated the phrase and announced Jose the winner of a brand new PlayStation 3.
Oh, Mr. Farrell, it's on.
The Man, The Myth: Perry Farrell
Even if you don't recognize his name, you know Perry Farrell's work. The lead singer of Jane's Addiction since forming the band in the '80s, Farrell's sung hits such as "Been Caught Stealing" and "Jane Says." As he made his mark on the music industry, Farrell would go on to found the crazy-popular music festival Lollapalooza in 1991. And wear white suits with sparkly lapels to SingStar events.
