Official Confirmation: PS3 Firmware 2.36 coming soon; 2.40 to offer In-game XMB and Trophies

After weeks of rumored PS3 Firmware 2.40 coming and the recently rumored intermediate 2.36 update, today we finally have official confirmation straight from Eric Lempel (Director, PlayStation Network Operations) as follows:

A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles.

We're also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include "XMB" access in-game. The update will also include "trophies," an exciting new feature that we'll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements.

We've talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you can't wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly.

Yeah.. we just want the In-game XMB! Ohh well this next firmware 2.36 will just do some security fixes etc. Should be here by tomorrow (19th June) whereas 2.40 should be here around 15-16th July before/during E3.

Hoping that we can find more information about the 2.40, such as how it works etc, with the custom music etc.. can't wait :-)
