New PS3 Ships with More Efficient and Cheaper 40nm RSX GPU
Update: The new 40nm PS3 systems are now in the wild, as confirmed by SovietSlayer via CAG at Fry's Electronics in Costa Mesa, CA.
In order to provide a more efficient and greener console, Sony is shipping new PS3 (CECH-2100A) entertainment systems which now include a cheaper 40nm (CXD5300AGB) RSX GPU that reduces energy output.
This reduction is down from the 90nm and more recently the 65nm RSX graphics processors and moves Sony one step closer to hardware profitability.
According to PocketNews (translated by PlayStationUniversity.com and confirmed by Engadget.com), the PlayStation 3's new improved RSX graphics chip also reduces the likelihood of the console being affected by the infamous PS3 YLOD (yellow light of death) while using 15 percent less power.
Finally, instead of using four 64mb XDR RAM chips it now utilizes two 128mb ones.
To quote: "Expect a 15% decrease in overall PS3 power consumption (vs the last PS3 Slim!) thanks to the upgrade, as well as a PS3 that's overall less likely to overheat.
And in case you cared about Sony's bottom line-and unless you hold stock, why would you-fewer, simplified cooling components coupled with the smaller GPU (that itself has less adjoining chips) mean that Sony may be in the black on each PS3 Slim that leaves Walmart or wherever cool kids shop these days."

The Energy Output is much less, but the Performance is the same right? Just cheaper for Sony to make, and also for us, less of a chance for it to overheat... i never had that issue but i guess the "Go Green" is going strong.
And most likely won't last as long then.. if they are making cheaper parts..

Nice and hopefully it will last for a few years or more depending on usage and or any abuse..
And if in following two years there will be still no signs of CFW and I'll finally run out of games to play off line (both BD and PSN) I've collected so far and never actually played properly anyway, then I might bulge in and update one or two of my phats. Funny thing that since Sony blocked the proxy pass by I'm actually playing games on my PS3 again. Like at good old PS2 / PS1 / Gameboy times ... who needs online anyway, eh?
It is very common for die shrinkage to happen in the semiconductor field. It gives them more chips per the same size silicon wafer. This means that you have a larger number of chips passing Quality Control (QC) tests. This is because as you approach the edges of the silicon wafers you have unused areas and more chance for defects. In the end, this helps them get more chips out per wafer which drives down the cost.
A good example of how die shrinkage has really affected the market is with the competition between Intel and AMD. Intel has been shipping 32nm processors for a while now and AMD is just catching up. This gives huge gains in performance per watt.
Any way, I will quit rambling and look forward to seeing the PS3 getting shrunk again and again until we have the PS3 Mini!
Guys, just to clarify. "Cheaper" does not equate to less quality.
Obviously, its a cost-cutting effort but this is really no different than BD Players being cheaper today compared to 3 years ago. Do you think a BD player manufactured today has a shorter lifespan than one manufactured 3 years ago? Of course not. But as the technology matures, new measures are adopted to increase efficiency.
In this case, the chip's footprint has been reduced while maintaining its performance, leading to less energy consumption which later translates to less heat dissipation. Cheaper, in this context, is in regards to cost, not quality.
hmmm with the advent of 40nm chips that are running much cooler and with much less ylod risk i am considering buying a new slim just so i can play new games (im a phat user that is still on 3.15 and love my linux). it's amazing how small we can manufacture technology now everything is getting smaller than the naked human eye could ever possibly hope to see.
i cant wait till the advent of picometer chips lol by then we may have mini ps3s that we can hold in our hands. but the advent of chips that small is probably still a coupple of years off... by then the ps4 will have been announced and we will probably have some sort of new 3d tech (check out Moore's law its an inevitable truth)
