Did the PlayStation 3 Have the Best Software in 2008?
Everyone is asking whether or not 2008 could be considered "the year of the PS3," and while it certainly closed the gap, the system still has a long ways to go from a sales perspective.
And while we're 100% certain the console will have the best exclusives in 2009 (do we really have to list those again?), this is a time for reflection. So...did the PS3 have the best software this year? Did the exclusives outstrip that of the competition?
As for the best games of the year, it had Grand Theft Auto IV, but there's no doubt that the driving software force in 2008 for the PS3 was Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Many will put this up against Gears of War 2 and GTAIV for their Game of the Year pick, and... well, the Wii doesn't even have games, does it?
Yeah. No, it doesn't. So it's a two-horse race for this year, and because most everything is multiplatform these days, maybe it's best to compare the PS3's "Big 3" against the 360's "Big 3."
Sure, stuff like GTAIV, Fallout 3, Dead Space, Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour, Call of Duty: World at War, Devil May Cry 4, Far Cry 2, Burnout Paradise, and Soul Calibur III are multi-console hits, and most all are almost identical between the PS3 and 360. So, about that big 3: the way I see it, it's MGS4, LBP and Resistance 2 versus Gears of War 2, Fable II, and Left 4 Dead. At least, those are by far the highest scoring 360 exclusives for the year, right?
So let the battle and debate begin. Personally, I think the two best that go head-to-head would have to be MGS4 and GeoW2, then I'll put Fable II up against LBP and L4D against R2. Now, one could also factor in the exclusive downloadable titles, but I think that Wipeout HD and echochrome are more than enough to top Braid, so let's leave that aside.
In terms of the Big 3 vs. the Big 3, I believe gamers could go on for eons, desperately trying to prove one side over the other. But for our part, we'll make it simple: we think MGS4 trounces everything else, so the PS3 wins. ;)
Okay, that may not be fair, but we could spend pages comparing the others, so let's just leave it be, yes? More PlayStation 3 News...
Quite true, I own Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet and I'm getting Resistance 2 for Christmas *yay finally * and Metal Gear Solid 4 was an AMAZING game. Awesome, stunning, heart wrenching, funny, oh there just aren't enough (positive) adjectives to describe this game. LittleBigPlanet is a game that will never, ever get old due to the mounds of DLC that is added, the patches and additions, and most of all the creativity and complete user generated content.
I will have to remember to write back in a couple of days to talk about Resistance 2.
As for Gears of War 2 and Fable 2, my brother will be getting both of these for Christmas so, I also have no true opinion on these games yet. Gears of War 2 looks to have some stunning graphics and detail and Fable 2 looks like it's a great game as well although, I don't know much about either.
Maybe I'll write back in on those as well.
Anyways I think that MGS4 was definitely #1 and LBP #2. These are two games that there is NOTHING like.
The other games may present themselves in a different manner but... ah, nevermind. I really don't want to say anything until I've gotten a true feel for each game.
It sure is crazy having me, a complete PlayStation 3 fan and my brother, an Xbox 360 fan. We can agree on pretty much everything but which console is better. Anyways, like in your other thread, Starlight, next year ought to show some 360 owners (and everybody else of course) straight on which console has more power graphics wise.
Well, pardon my running on and personal hoo-ha.
PlayStation 3 FTW!
I still need to see a game that can out perform MGS4 graphic-wise. As for the big exclusives on both consoles, I also think the PS3 had the better ones. Sure I still wished GOW2 had been released for the PS3, but Fable II doesn't quite seem to interrest me and L4D looked alotta fun but is (yet again) another shooter.
As for the downloadable games i haven't played those on Live but those on PSN were very impressive (not to mention the reviews those games got with an outstanding rating).
Also 2008 was a year of great firmware updates for the ps3! Sales-wise it was the year of the Wii. Software-wise i'd say PS3.
I wonder what 2009 will bring us.
