November 10, 2006 - Two days ago, we reported that Japanese retail PS3s would require a system update to be able to connect to the PlayStation Network hub. While we weren't sure if the North American systems would suffer the same updating fate, we wanted to make sure that we checked out our consoles as soon as we got them in.
Well, we can all stop wondering, because it's definitely confirmed: you'll need to upgrade your PS3 from system software version 1.0 to 1.10 to connect to the Internet.
As we were connecting the system and adjusting the Internet settings under the System tab on the Cross Media Bar, we discovered that an IP was resolved for the console, but it wouldn't let us connect cleanly to the Internet for browsing purposes. When we backed out and selected Connect via Internet, it worked properly and started the download process, which took approximately 15 minutes to complete. This could have been because of network issues or downloading problems. As we're not sure of the actual size of the upgrade as we published this story, your download speed may vary.
