I might just buy a Wii if this modchip does everything it claims to do.

Region coding is different than NTSC/PAL. NTSC and PAL different ways the image is sent to the screen. The chip should work for any PAL imports in your case. And i think there is a simple way to convert from NTSC to PAL, but i'm not sure. Someone should test the chip on a EUR Wii before you buy one.

As for it being upgradeable via dvd. Doesn't that leave the chip open to be messed with by Nintendo? Technically, they could reprogram the chip to no longer work. Or, even worse, they could program it to mess up the drive in some way that you can't use the wii anymore, and then your system is no good and you voided the warranty by putting the chip in, leaving you with no choice but to buy another. Or maybe i'm paranoid.

I like the idea of getting a pic programmer and putting the hex code on myself and installing it, then whenever i need to upgrade it, i just reprogram/program a new chip (not sure how that works yet).

    Good point macd4tw

That's what I was wondering about when I read it (along w/ the NTSC use on PAL Wii).

Maybe some programmer or someone who knows how that works might tell us why Nintendo wouldn't be able to do it to reassure us ^^

Generally speaking, the PIC 125C08 is write-once, UV erasable.

I think if nintendo purposely broke your modchip they'd have some major legal issues. If they broke your 180 wii they'd be in heaps of trouble.

That's not possible with the wii, because like the 360, the executables are signed. You cannot hack a wii game until the system is fully hacked. So, if the mod can be detected, the only option would be to make a new mod that isn't detectable.

To follow up on my earlier post in this thread... these are the rumored final Xeno WiiKey features:
    - Direct boot of Wii back-ups
    - Direct boot of GC back-ups
    - Direct boot of homebrew in GC mode
    - supports all currently available console/drive versions
    - Supports D2B chipsets
    - Sophisticated (true) update mechanism via DVD (future proof, expect cool features to come)
    - Direct boot of different NTSC region Wii games/back-ups on US and JAP consoles
    - Partial support for NTSC region Wii games/back-ups on PAL consoles
    - Boots different region GC games/back-ups (partially without swapping)
    - Supports multi-disc games for BOTH Wii and Gamecube
    - Supports DVD-R / true DVD+R and +RW support (no bitsetting required!)
    - Improved readsettings for recordable media
    - built-in audio fix
    - supports fullsize 4GB discs for gamecube homebrew
    - Stealth mode
    - 512 byte EEPROM to store configuration
    - Easy 6 wires to solder
    - unique disc back-up application via sdcard
    - Compact design, best quality components, rock solid high speed controller
    - Professional ESD packing
Still not as nice as a free PIC hexcode (or flashing the drive itself instead like PDX is doing), but for those who can't wait it may be the best option at the moment feature-wise for a pay mod-chip.

Doesn't that mean that if Nintendo wanted to be evil and mean to us (ppl who install such chips) could create a time delayed update in one of their games, that removes the functionality of the chip and blocks the chip from being used/re-installed again?
