US Air Force is Buying 2200 PlayStation 3 Consoles for Research

279w ago - The United States Air Force will soon be placing an order with Sony for 2,200 PlayStation 3 consoles... and they're not even going to play games on them.

Instead, the consoles will be headed to the USAF Research Laboratory's information directorate in Rome, New York, where they'll be combined with 336 consoles the lab already own to form a "cluster" of Cell chips.

This cluster will then be put to work grinding out better ways to process high-res radar images, video footage, as well as research on "neuromorphic computing."

To quote: "The Air Force will use the system to "to determine the best fit for implementation of various applications," including commercial and internally developed software specific to the PS3's Cell Broadband Engine processor architecture.

The research will help the Air Force decide where Cell Broadband Engine processor-derived hardware and software could be used in military systems.

The Air Force has used the cluster to test a method of processing multiple radar images into higher resolution composite images (known as synthetic aperture radar image formation), high-def video processing, and "neuromorphic computing," or building computers with brain-like properties."

Well, if they can find all their enemies from the safety of their base, then I would have to say that it is money, and time well spent

Nope nope nope ... you all got it wrong. The USAF will not be playing games, running fancy operating system testing or anything as obvious like that ..... methinks ..... I think they will have 2200 unmanned airial vehicles (UAV's) - then they will check out your trophy collections and select the 2200 best "aces" in HAWX.

These selected few will be employed by the USAF to bomb small countries through PSN or perhaps a more secure multi "player" system. So if you want to go and bomb a small unassuming country who hides their only nuke in a bunker in some forsaken desert, you better start sharpening your arial combat skills and earn some trophies!

Thats true, they could also work with sony to get all of those consoles "open" and completely unlocked so they can reprogram it to however they need it to be.

Doesnt exactly this fact made the PS3 to THE best Super Computer available to this time?

If a normal system works a little bit other then the ps3 or not doesnt matter. But it matters what results a super computer will have. And if a company produce a SC system with included gpu flops then it also doesnt matter.

Do you mean that any one who buy a PS3 cluster does matter about the gpu flops or not? He want to see good results. The best if possible. There for plz, companys buy PS3 Cluster's. There for the PS3 is the best super computer to time you can get

What I am saying is that the PS3 is an awesome game system, home computer, and part of low cost supercomputer. It isn't really the thing that the Air Force is after. My comment about the flops being misleading was meant that they add the graphics processor flops and the cell flops together to give it an ultra high flop count. Linux can only access the Cell processor for doing number crunching, the RSX cannot be used for parallel computations, therefor the flops should not be included-that is why the flop rate is so high although some of the flops are not used in linux.

As I said it is great for games, normal computing, and low budget supercomputing, however, it isn't the best way of getting the job done. I do believe the cell B.E. processor is awesome and maybe the best way of supercomputing, not in the ps3 form, but in an actual QPACE supercomputer cluster (it has the same type processors as the ps3), but it isn't a PS3 cluster.

I do agree that the Cell processor is probably the best processor to base a super computer off of. And I agree that the PS3 is awesome because it contains a Cell B.E. processor. But I disagree that it can perform the best in the PS3 form.

Why 2200, Why retail? Why now?, You figure it out...

It never said it was a retail purchase I doubt any store has 2200 PS3's in stock. And in the article it said that they might look into it and see if the cell processors have any military applications. If so I'd assume they'd go straight to Sony.

Why does everything need to be a conspiracy nowadays?

You misunderstand me. The OtherOS just right now still is in the FW of the PS3. But the slim doesnt have the OtherOS Kernel.

If someone want to have the ps3 to be used for OtherOS Sony could still implement the OtherOS kernel and via flag or byte activate it than to be used on a slim.

And i dont belive this myth of "reducing the costs" for trop out the OtherOS.But sonic also dont will state like that: "Ok the OtherOS have the ability to hack the cell becouse you can writte and execute unsigned code on the ps3"

If it is possible or not doesnt matter now.But i belive so.Its a new arcitecture and would need a little bit more time to find a way to exploit the Cell and maybe get a way into the CPU to do what ever...

Or let me explain on a other way... the ps3 have enough power to hack the encryption and private/puplic key of the ps3 itself when you use it in a cluster.

Since now the official slim ps3 doesnt support OtherOS, and let us say i would won a million € at the lottory, i couldnt simply buy a retail ps3 and use it in a cluster to hack the ps3 itself. I would need to order a special slim version that will be OtherOS able from sony. And sonic wouldnt give me this special slim version
