September 27, 2010 // 4:53 am - Today French site PS3Gen.fr (linked above) reports news of a project RichDevX is working on where a PSGroove payload is utilized for examining PS3 Service Mode.

To quote, roughly translated: "RichDevX tells us about his progress with his playload to put the PlayStation 3 in service mode and recently released two snapshots of progress.

It is indeed working on a payload to get the console into service mode and be able to launch a file. Choke on every boot via a USB key and others.

As shown in this first image, we can see the red box on the XMB showing that the console actually went into service mode. In this mode, it is possible to run specific software, including one allowing the downgrade (the opposite of update, ie back to a previous firmware).

OtherOS who says so says downgrade option of going back 3.15 for benefit of OtherOS plus most of the hack with PSGroove.

Payload through this, it is also possible to run each time you start the console, loading a file. Self from a USB key as explained above. This could allow the hack using only one time a dongle or other, then your USB stick could complete the task alone. Advances in the underground world push the limits even further, watch this."

Finally, those who haven't heard about the PlayStation 3 Factory / Service Mode before today may wish to browse through the following past articles: Service Mode PS3 Arrives, PS3 Service Mode JIG Files Leaked, Service Mode Tests Begin, Service Mode Information and PS3 Service Mode Details.

This sounds very similar to what PSDowngrade promises to do. Just without the one-time-serial.

Thought it could be useful to remind you guys of some of your old news. If not, please excuse.

How far did he get ? Is it possible to install Debug FW ? When he got his ps3 in service mode, couldn't he install a new core os and flashing ps3 to debug with cex/dex ?

If we get Debug FW on the Retail Console, we wouldn't need the Jailbreak anymore...?!

This would be a great step for the JB scene. I hope these guys manage to make a public release!

What i'm hopeful for is way to use different blu ray logic boards with a motherboard, a sowtware tool to do this would be very useful. I have a logic board that has either been swapped out or is bad/needs reflow...

I wonder if this can lead to ways of being able to update backups of games.

Good point and true! So much has happened over the past few weeks. It shouldn't be un-expecting to see this released. It will probably happen but God knows when.

doubt it as they'd block whatever functions it uses via the update.

Ok just a little more speculation... If service mode will allow us to install the jailbreak permanently, would this mean we would once again be free to update?

As presumably all $ony did with the 3.42 update was prevent the PS3 booting from third party USB devices on start up!
